The History of sankofa

Our Story: Rooted in Reflection, Growing Through Action

In 2005, amidst the serene backdrop of California’s high desert, a powerful moment unfolded at a multicultural, multi-faith gathering. It was there that our founder met Ras Charles, and together they embraced the West African concept of Sankofa—a symbol that teaches us to look back, learn from the past, and use that wisdom to build a brighter future. That encounter ignited the vision for what would become Sankofa Charities Incorporated—a beacon of hope, healing, and empowerment.

Our path was deeply influenced by the transformative work of Urban Housing Solutions Inc., whose example inspired us to formalize our mission. On November 29, 2014, Sankofa Charities was officially founded in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then, we’ve been dedicated to serving individuals—especially young men and women in transition—across Davidson County and surrounding areas.

We believe in the power of education, holistic health, and community support to help individuals rebuild their lives—whether they’re navigating the challenges of teen parenthood or reentering society after incarceration.

Powered by People Like You

At Sankofa Charities, we live by the motto: Together, We Make the Difference. As a 100% donor-funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit, we rely solely on the generosity of individuals like you. We receive no state or federal funding—every act of kindness, every donation, fuels our mission.

One of our earliest and most impactful programs was a low-cost transportation service in Nashville, providing door-to-door rides for young mothers pursuing education or entering the workforce. This initiative helped eliminate a major barrier to opportunity: access.

Programs That Change Lives

Our commitment to empowering young women led to the creation of “Save Our Girls”, a program designed to support teenage mothers in completing their education. Through mentorship, donation drives, and sponsorships, we help dismantle systemic barriers and guide young women toward higher education and meaningful careers.

In 2020, we expanded our reach with the publication of The Long Way Home, a vital resource for professionals working with individuals transitioning from incarceration. Yet, like many, we faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, which strained our volunteer-driven support systems.

Rebuilding Stronger in 2024

In 2024, we entered a new chapter of strategic growth, forging powerful partnerships with organizations such as Diersen Charities, Urban Housing Solutions Inc., and Project Return Inc. These collaborations have strengthened our foundation and reaffirmed our mission to create lasting, meaningful change in the communities we serve.
